Friendswood ISD Education Foundation Receives $10,000 Tribute Gift Honoring Dr. Jean Wren’s Legacy in Education
Feb 27 2026
Dr. Jean WrenThe Friendswood ISD Education Foundation (FEF) received a generous tribute gift of $10,000 from the Wren family in honor of Kiley and Pat Wren’s mother, Dr. Jean Wren, a lifelong educator and influential leader whose career left a lasting impact on Friendswood ISD (FISD) and the broader education community. The gift will support the Foundation’s Educator Scholarship program, continuing Dr. Wren’s legacy of investing in future generations of educators.
Education was deeply rooted in Dr. Wren’s family, with both her mother and grandmother serving as teachers. She devoted her life to education and to serving the students and staff of FISD. Beginning her career as a classroom teacher, she advanced to roles as assistant principal and principal. Over time, she assumed district-level leadership positions, serving as Vocational Administrator, Director of Instructional Programs, and Director of Special Education.
She also played a pioneering role in launching FISD’s Community Education program in 1975, serving as Community Education Coordinator and helping expand learning opportunities for community members of all ages.
Dr. Wren earned her Ph.D. in education from the University of Houston at a time when few women pursued doctoral degrees. In 1977, she broke new ground when she was named Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at FISD, becoming one of the first women in Texas to serve in such a leadership role. Determined to create new professional pathways and opportunities for other educators, she worked tirelessly to mentor and uplift those entering the profession.
Even after retiring from FISD in 1994, Dr. Wren remained dedicated to education, serving as an educational consultant and adjunct professor at several universities, including the University of St. Thomas, University of Houston–Clear Lake, University of Houston–University Park, and Texas A&M University. She also held a long-standing leadership role in advancing programs through the Region 4 Education Service Center, where she helped develop and organize Title I reading programs that supported student success across the seven-county-region.
Throughout her career, Dr. Wren authored numerous educational articles and received multiple honors, including recognition in Who’s Who of American Women and a certificate of appreciation for civic contributions from the City of Friendswood.
Above all, those who knew her describe Dr. Wren as an educator at heart, someone who found joy in helping others learn, grow, and thrive. She held deep love for the Friendswood community and remained devoted to FISD throughout her life.
When the Wrens learned that a tribute gift supporting educator scholarships could serve as a meaningful way to honor their mother, the decision was easy. As they shared, the opportunity “had Mom written all over it,” reflecting Dr. Wren’s lifelong passion for building up educators and expanding opportunities for students.
Through their tribute gift, the Wren family hopes to help future educators achieve their own dreams of impacting students’ lives, a mission closely aligned with Dr. Wren’s lifelong work.
“On behalf of FEF, we feel so humbled to be a part of honoring Dr. Wren’s legacy in such a meaningful way,” FEF Executive Director Ashley Adair said. “It’s been such a joy to share the news of this gift and hear so many reflect on Dr. Wren’s continued imprint on FISD.”
The Wren family hopes to inspire others to consider supporting the continuing education of FISD staff through FEF’s Continuing Education Scholarship Program as well. Community members interested in supporting scholarships or honoring a loved one’s legacy through tribute gifts are encouraged to contact the Foundation at EducationFoundation@fisdk12.net.
